See who played well as Clarets Draw with La Liga Opposition
Burnley returned to Turf Moor for the first time this pre-season, playing out a 2-2 draw against La Liga side Espanyol.
The visitors took the lead inside the opening four minutes after Hannibal’s misplaced pass led to a defensive breakdown at the back.
The Clarets responded well, with Aaron Ramsey equalising to score at Turf Moor for the second consecutive appearance. His finish was almost identical to the goal he scored against Derby County earlier in pre-season.
Burnley then took the lead shortly after the restart when Andreas Hountondji met Mike Trésor’s cross to put the hosts ahead.
However, Espanyol found a late equaliser to ensure the spoils were shared.
Player Ratings
Max Weiss – 6.5/10
Didn’t have much chance with either goal and was otherwise relatively untroubled. The German didn’t command his area well enough to prevent the second from a corner.
Oliver Sonne – 8/10
A bright attacking display. He looked very comfortable operating as a wing-back, making several dangerous forward runs and offering plenty of width throughout.
Kyle Walker – 6/10
A composed performance from the veteran. His lack of pace wasn’t exposed playing centrally, and he appears far more comfortable at centre-back under Hayen than he would on the right-hand side of the defence.
Joe Worrall – 6/10
The only outfield player to complete the full 90 minutes. Calm in possession and generally assured throughout.
Bashir Humphreys – 6/10
Playing out of his natural centre-back position, Humphreys’ lack of attacking threat was evident. Nevertheless, he adapted well enough to Hayen’s higher pressing system and looks better suited to a more central role.
Ugo Raghouber – 8/10
A really impressive debut. He looks like a genuine Josh Cullen-style midfielder, intelligent in possession and well suited to Hayen’s style of play.
Hannibal – 5.5/10
A mixed performance. His misplaced pass gifted Espanyol the opening goal, but his freedom to roam across midfield also highlighted his technical quality and creativity.
Aaron Ramsey – 8/10
Fitness remains the biggest question, but if he can finally put his injury problems behind him, he could become a key player this season. Took his goal excellently and looked a constant attacking threat.
Jacob Bruun Larsen – 7/10
Linked play well in attacking areas and looked lively throughout his spell on the pitch.
Zian Flemming – 6/10
Worked hard without making a significant impact in the final third.
Marcus Edwards – 6/10
Showed flashes of quality but never quite influenced the game consistently.
Josh Laurent – 5/10
A disappointing second-half display. A rash challenge shortly after coming on was met with strong criticism from Hayen, and he looked a shadow of the player seen under Parker. Defensively he struggled and also lost possession in the build-up to Espanyol’s equaliser.
George Brierley – 7/10
A positive cameo. Looked confident in possession and continued to impress whenever involved.
Ellis Clark – 6.5/10
A tidy performance, using the ball well and keeping things simple.
Hjalmar Ekdal –6/10
A relatively quiet game from the swede, returning with world cup break with a tidy yet quiet performance.
Lucas Pires – 6/10
Steady without standing out.
Andreas Hountondji – 7/10
Took his goal well and offered a physical presence after coming on.
Mike Trésor – 7/10
Provided an excellent assist for Hountondji and looked dangerous whenever he got on the ball. Like Rasmey if he can stay fit he may have a part to play this season
Sambo – 6.5/10
Energetic performance with plenty of running on the flank.
