The abuse Alan Pace is getting from sections of the Burnley support is becoming embarrassing.

Yes, Burnley are bottom of the Championship. Yes, five league games without a win is dreadful for a club that came down from the Premier League expecting to challenge for promotion. And yes, losing 2-1 at home to Bristol City after taking the lead — with two late goals turning Turf Moor toxic — deserves serious criticism.

But screaming abuse at Pace as though he has spent his time at Burnley dismantling the club is ridiculous.

This is the same ownership that has backed managers, spent money on players and tried to establish Burnley as something more ambitious than a club bouncing between divisions. That strategy has not always worked. Recruitment has been poor, managerial decisions can be questioned and relegation last season was failure. Nobody should pretend otherwise.

But football ownership is not judged by finding one man to blame every time results turn bad.

Pace appointed Nicky Hayen in July and the new manager has barely had time to establish himself. Burnley continued investing in the squad this summer, including the deadline-day signing of Reo Hatate from Celtic. Five Championship games are nowhere near enough evidence to declare the entire project dead.

Some supporters need to decide what they want. They demand ambition, spending and change, then howl for somebody’s head when those decisions carry risk and results are not immediate.

The personal vitriol aimed at the chairman is pathetic.

Support the club, scrutinise the ownership and demand better. That is what supporters should do.

Turning Alan Pace into a pantomime villain because Burnley have started badly is not passion. It is lazy scapegoating.

We are meant to be supporters, back the lads, back the squad and we will come back better!

Burnley Women’s maiden WSL 2 game ended in a 0-0 stalemate against fellow promoted side Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Clarets entered the division for the first time after winning the FA Women’s National League North last season, while Watford returned to the second tier as champions of the Southern Premier Division.

Both sides enjoyed good chances, but neither was able to find the breakthrough as the points were shared.

Burnley captain Christie Harrison-Murray nearly made the dream start to her Clarets debut. After receiving the ball just outside the area, her looping effort was comfortably caught by Safia Middleton-Patel.

The Clarets continued to create chances in an even contest. Claudia Mummery-Walker attempted a cheeky dink over Middleton-Patel, but the Welsh international produced another comfortable catch.

A quieter period followed, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Burnley bravely put bodies on the line to defend their box before goalkeeper Kirstie Levell produced an excellent save just before half-time to keep the scores level.

Despite the lack of chances, Burnley looked the stronger side overall in the first half. Their best opportunity before the break came when Jamie Finn headed over from a promising corner.

Almost immediately after the restart, Watford saw a floating effort travel across the Burnley penalty area following a defensive error from substitute Niaomi Hartley.

Middleton-Patel was then called into action and produced a superb double save, first denying Harrison-Murray before keeping out Emma Siddall’s follow-up to prevent Burnley from taking the lead.

Levell was the busier goalkeeper during the second half as the hosts came out after the break enjoying the better chances in front of goal, but Watford were unable to find the difference.

Burnley therefore began their first WSL 2 campaign with a point on the road.

Next up for the Clarets is a return to Turf Moor to face Sunderland, while Watford travel to face Nottingham Forest.

Zian Flemming has made it clear to Burnley that he wants to leave the club as he looks to play at the highest level again.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the 27-year-old has informed Burnley of his desire to move on, with ambitions of returning to the Premier League or joining a leading European club.

French side Lille have emerged as a potential destination for Flemming, with a move previously appearing likely. However, negotiations between Lille and Burnley have proved difficult, leaving the forward’s future unresolved.

Flemming is understood to remain hopeful that Burnley will allow him to leave after becoming an important figure at Turf Moor.

The Clarets conceded three goals in the first twenty minutes, something which hasn’t happened to them in the Championship since August 2008 - the last opponent to do so was Sheffield Wednesday.

. The Clarets were two goals down inside five minutes after Mo Touré and Andre Brooks struck early, before Touré added his second to make it 3-0. Josh Laurent gave Burnley brief hope with an excellent 20-yard finish, but Norwich remained in control and Brooks restored the three-goal advantage in the second half.

Despite a poor first half, a slightly improved second half followed, alas the clarets still conceded 4 goals for the first time in the second tier since the 5-2 defeat to Sheffield United in 2022. The result also sees Burnley lose consecutive championship games for the First time since 2013. To add to the Claret misery, they have slipped into the Championship bottom 3 for the first time since August 2015.

Player ratings

Max Weiß - 3/10: There was little he could do about the first three goals, but the fourth was different. He should have dealt with that moment with much more confidence.

Kyle Walker - 2/10:

Another really poor show from Walker, who looked a yard off the pace and far too easy to get at defensively. He struggled with runners in behind, rarely looked comfortable when isolated and did little to justify his place in the side. For a player of his experience, the lack of control and authority was especially disappointing. Hayen now has a serious call to make, because on current form Walker’s starting place should be under real pressure.

Anel Azhmenhdozic - 4/10: Some credit is deserved on his full debut, but he was sloppy in giving the ball away for the first goal.

Max Allyene - 4.5/10: The new partnership is proving slow to get going and clearly needs time. He still looks as though he is trying to play the Pep way.

Connor Roberts - 4.5/10: Used out of position. It did not work under Kompany and, based on these notes, it did not work today either.

Josh Laurent - 6/10: A bright spark, took his goal well. He was unlucky to be sent off.

Hannibal - 5/10: Much like last week, this was a quiet game from him.

Aaron Ramsey - 4.5/10: Looked as though he was not physical enough for what Hayen wants.

Jacob Brunn Larsen - 5.5/10: There were glimpses of quality, but the overall performance was not good enough.

Zian Flemming - 5.5/10: Based on Burnley’s performance here, there would be no qualms if Flemming were to leave.

Dastan Satpaev - 6/10: Like at Bradford, he was very bright and attack-minded. A bright spark in a dark day for the Clarets.

Where to next? Well, the Clarets welcome high flying Middlesborough to Turf Moor on Wednesday 2nd September.

However first up is arguably the most important transfer window of the ALK Era so far -Tuesday 11pm marks the end of the summer window.

After the disappointment of Wednesday night’s knockout defeat to Bradford City, Burnley turn their attention back to league action as they travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City.

Burnley have been handed a boost ahead of the trip to Carrow Road, with Zian Flemming available for selection.

A really impressive debut. He looks like a genuine Josh Cullen-style midfielder, intelligent in possession and well suited to Hayen’s style of play.

A mixed performance. His misplaced pass gifted Espanyol the opening goal, but his freedom to roam across midfield also highlighted his technical quality and creativity.

Aaron Ramsey – 8/10

Fitness remains the biggest question, but if he can finally put his injury problems behind him, he could become a key player this season. Took his goal excellently and looked a constant attacking threat.

Jacob Bruun Larsen – 7/10

Linked play well in attacking areas and looked lively throughout his spell on the pitch.

Zian Flemming – 6/10

Worked hard without making a significant impact in the final third.

Showed flashes of quality but never quite influenced the game consistently.

The Premier League commission has ordered Everton to pay Burnley £35m in damages from the Clarets relegation in 2022.

The commission found that Burnley had a adjusted loss of £26M due to their relegation, bringing the total sum to £35m when taking account for interest.

The East Lancashire outfit were relegated to the second tier for the first time in seven years after a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle united. in November 2023 Everton were docked 10 points, reduced to six on appeal, for PSR breaches. Burnley argued that should this breach have been applied in 2022, they would have stayed up.

Everton finished 16th in 2021-22 on 39 points, with Leeds in 17th on 38 points and Burnley 18th on 35 points. The Clarets argued their case on the basis that should the points have been deducted, their chance of retaining their status would have increased

In a statement Everton said “Everton Football Club is surprised and angered by the decision of a Premier League Independent Disciplinary Commission to order a compensation payment to Burnley Football Club in relation to Everton’s PSR breach in June 2022.”

“The Club does not recognize the findings of the panel in determining Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in May 2022 was caused by a sporting advantage gained by Everton due to a breach of Profit & Sustainability Rules, for which a substantive sporting sanction has already been received,

“Everton has appealed the decision and is clear in its belief the ruling is fundamentally flawed in both law and fact.” The Club added.

Burnley owner Alan pace said “When we were relegated in 2022, we disappointingly accepted the outcome on the pitch. What we could not accept and what no club should be asked to accept was competing in a competition later shown to have been compromised.

The Independent Commission has now confirmed, in clear terms, that a rule was broken and a competitive advantage was improperly gained.

“Our action has always been about making football fair. Clubs that comply with the rules deserve to compete on a level playing field. Fans deserve it. The sport demands it.

The Commission’s decision affirms the existing framework to protect the game.”

Both clubs have confirmed that No further comment will be made on the case until the appeal process has been successfully concluded.

So this is it, Burnley find themselves at a crossroads for the third time in five years following relegation from the premier league.

The club has announced its retained list today, with two senior players leaving, one midfielder out of contract and two still in discussions - it’s set to be a busy summer at Turf Moor.

Goalkeepers Martin Dubravka and Vclav Hladky will depart at the end of their contracts on the 30th June.

Hladky has only made one league appearance in 18 months, with his last appearance coming in the 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Lancashire rivals Preston North End.

Dubravka on the other hand signed from Newcastle United last summer and made 35 premier league appearances before being dropped for Max Weiss.
